How do I set up my space for yoga?

Every human is different, so everyone has their own preferences when it comes to setting up their space for yoga. Here’s a few of my top tips for creating the perfect space for a peaceful session.

Mat maths. While it’s not absolutely essential to use a yoga mat, I would highly recommend it as it’s designed to be a protective layer for your bones when in asanas! Your yoga mat doesn’t have to be the most expensive Alo, Lulu or Lifeforme model it helps to get a good mat with firm yet cushioning foam - my lightweight mat from Amazon is great for outdoor sessions.

Getting to grips. I’ve had my fair share of mats in my life, and have always found my hands slipping in downward facing dog. You’ll see me using a hand towel quite a bit - this helps me to relax into the pose without worrying I’m going to slip. If you’re a sweaty girl or guy like me, I’d highly recommend investing in a decent microfibre towel for added grip. (Mine is from Manduka if you’re wondering)

Clear the area. Lots of flows and asanas will get you off the mat a little, particularly those gorgeous supine twists. Don’t be afraid to take up space, but clear the area of furniture, bottles, bags, pets and anything else that might get in the way of your flow.

It’s just good scents. Not bothered by the smell of last nights dinner when you’re practising? Go for it! I’m a bit sensitive when it comes to scents, so I love to light a candle, burn some incense or put on some essential oils before I start - our brains are incredibly good at associating smells with certain memories, and this helps me to set the right mental space for my practice. I recommend Nag Champa incense and clary sage essential oils.

Music makes me lose control. If you’re like me and live in Dubai, you’ll be familiar with the constant background noise of angle grinders, concrete pumps and sports cars revving (iykyk). Most of my online sessions have background music to set the tone, but if you’re practising on your own, it’s always a good idea to put on some relaxing music so you’re not distracted by every sound inside and outside the house.

I hope this helps, I look forward to meeting you on the mat soon!
